Frequently Asked Questions

→ What is "Rope Play"?

Rope Play is one of the ways we refer to the Japanese art and practice of ethically & enjoyably tying one's self or one's partners for intimate, connective, artistic, creative, and many other reasons.

It goes by many names (more popularly, the Japanese words for "tying" or "tight binding")—but on this specific safe-for-work website, we refer to it as Rope Play.

It takes heavy inspiration from Japan's history of using ropes not just in agricultural but law enforcement and disciplinary situations too—and has grown into a rich, modern practice celebrated worldwide.

→ Is this a guide on how to tie?

No. These cards focus on how to stay safe and communicate clearly before, during, and after a rope play session—regardless of whether you're the one doing the tying or getting tied.

If you are interested in learning how to tie in Metro-Manila, downloading these Session Safety Cards will subscribe you to our newsletter where you can receive invites to local events and offers: from public workshops to private training, as well as social tying events with the local community!

→ Do I need any experience?

Not at all! We know how intimidating rope play can seem. That’s why these cards are written in plain, friendly language—designed to give you peace of mind, not pressure!

That said, while these cards are meant for complete beginners, experienced rope players are welcome, too! They're a fast and easy way to pick up the handy tricks we've learned over the span of 10+ years in the Philippines' local community of rope players that we hope would help more people everywhere.

Everyone who likes rope play deserves a better shot at satisfying, safer, and sustainable sessions!

→ Who made these cards?

The Session Safety Cards were created by Dee Sapalo (aka Daki)—the same person behind the largest active community for Japanese style rope tying enthusiasts in the Philippines.

I made these cards to help people interested in rope play take the next step, mitigate the very real risks, and find peers and training that are welcoming, supportive, and non-judgmental.

We hope you'll enjoy getting your feet wet as you explore the fun of Japanese rope art!

→ Where can I watch or learn how to tie?

Once you've joined our newsletter, you'll receive invitations to local events regarding rope play—such as workshops, performances, and rope jams! If you prefer, you can even book a private guided session with your partners or friends.

Our goal is for these cards to help give you the confidence to explore further—safely, at your own pace!
